Ética e Amor Platônico na Obra “Morte em Veneza” de Thomas Mann / Ethics and Platonic Love in “Death in Venice” by Thomas Mann

Resumo

Analisam-se a ética e o amor platônico na obra literária “Morte em Veneza”, do escritor alemão Paul Thomas Mann, em especial, a edição em português da Nova Fronteira, ano 2010. Parte-se da relação possível entre filosofia e literatura e da evidência de que se o ser humano tende a viver de acordo com os padrões impostos pela sociedade no qual está circunscrito, na obra de Mann, o amor limita-se à contemplação do belo sem ultrapassar os ditames morais em vigor, o que propicia, com frequência, silêncio absoluto e contida veneração do belo como culto à arte grega ou aos deuses da mitologia grega. Em termos metodológicos, adota-se revisão da literatura e pesquisa qualitativa, cujos resultados coletados não exigem quantificação, e, sim, diálogo permanente com autores do campo analítico, no caso, Sigmund Freud; Jane Adamson; Richard Friedman e David Parker, além de Martha Nussbaum, Richard Eldridge e Milton Cardoso, dentre outros. Quanto à estrutura, de início, apresentam-se a vida e a obra do autor, destaque especial para a citada “Morte em Veneza”. A seguir, é o momento de referendar a ética e as virtudes do ser humano, como também, o amor e o silêncio no universo filosófico da obra em questão, visando sempre à interação entre as duas grandes áreas – filosofia e literatura ou literatura e filosofia. Por fim, infere-se que a filosofia proporciona reflexão mais abrangente e intrinsecamente profunda na literatura: a veneração do amor se reduz à mera contemplação, impossibilitando sua vivência efetiva, o que referenda o amor platônico.

ABSTRACT

The objective is to analyze ethics and platonic love in the literary work “Death in Venice”, by the German writer Paul Thomas Mann, in particular the Portuguese edition of Nova Fronteira, Rio de Janeiro, year 2010. It starts from the possible relationship between philosophy and literature and from the evidence that if the human being tends to live according to the standards imposed by the society in which he is circumscribed, in Mann's work, love is limited to the contemplation of the beauty without going beyond the prevailing moral, which provides, often absolute silence and restrained veneration of the beauty as a cult of Greek art or the gods of Greek mythology. In methodological terms, the study adopts the literature review and the qualitative research, whose collected results do not require quantification, but a permanent dialogue with authors from the analytical field, in this case, Sigmund Freud; Jane Adamson; Richard Friedman and David Parker, as well as Martha Nussbaum, Richard Eldridge and Milton Cardoso, among others. As for the structure, the author's life and work are initially presented, with special emphasis on the aforementioned “Death in Venice”. Next, it is time to endorse the ethics and virtues of the human being, as well as the love and silence in the philosophical universe of the work in question, always aiming at the interaction between the two major areas - philosophy and literature or literature and philosophy. Finally, it is inferred that philosophy provides a more comprehensive and intrinsically profound reflection in literature: the veneration of love is reduced to mere contemplation, making its effective experience impossible, which endorses platonic love.
