Abstract

ABSTRACT

The yerba mate plant (Ilex paraguariensis) and its uses and applications are being increasingly studied. Originally from subtropical forests in South America, with Argentina as the main producer of the plant and the largest consumers in Brazil and Uruguay, the plant is being exported to countries in Europe and the Middle East, as well as countries such as Chile and the USA. With the aim of verifying information such as characteristics, data regarding the production and applications of yerba mate, this article becomes an indispensable source of consultation for the most varied research involving the topic of yerba mate. This research has a theoretical-conceptual approach, of a descriptive and exploratory type, about yerba mate, its characteristics and applications, and was outlined by a bibliographic and documentary study. The contextualization technique is used to deepen and understand the subject of yerba mate in all its spheres. Yerba mate is widely consumed and rich in compounds, used in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage industries, among others. It also has numerous benefits for human health, acting as anti-cancer, anti-allergic, diuretic, improving digestion, anti-hypertensive, hepaprotective, antioxidant, anti-obesity effects and many others.
