MANTER A ORDEM, ASSEGURAR O PROGRESSO: MODERNIZAÇÃO POLICIAL E CONTROLE SOCIAL EM CURITIBA DURANTE A PRIMEIRA REPÚBLICA / MAINTAIN ORDER, ENSURE PROGRESS: POLICE MODERNIZATION AND SOCIAL CONTROL IN CURITIBA DURING THE FIRST REPUBLIC

Abstract

Instituição fundamental à consolidação do monopólio do uso da violência pelo Estado, a policia viu ampliados sua importância e poder ao longo do processo de consolidação da modernidade urbana. Mas junto com eles, cresceram igualmente os muitos conflitos que acompanharam sua trajetória. Este artigo pretende acompanhar parte do processo de modernização policial na cidade de Curitiba, capital do estado do Paraná, ao sul do Brasil, durante as décadas finais do século XIX e iniciais do XX. O objetivo é, principalmente, problematizar as tensões entre os projetos governamentais de controle social, o aparato policial e a população urbana.

ABSTRACT

Institution fundamental to the consolidation of the monopoly of the use of violence by the State, the police saw it increasing its importance and power during the process of consolidation of urban modernity. But, along with it, also grew the many conflicts that followed its trajectory. This article intends to follow part of the process of police modernization in the city of Curitiba, capital of Paraná, in southern Brazil, during the final decades of the nineteenth century and early decades of the twentieth. The purpose is mainly to discuss the tension between the government projects of social control, the police apparatus and the urban population.
