Abstract

O presente estudo discute os fundamentos do materialismo histórico e suas implicações para o desenvolvimento do pensamento geográfico, destacando as contribuições de Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Quaini e Friedrich Ratzel. O materialismo histórico, ao afirmar que as condições materiais e econômicas determinam as formas de consciência e organização social, estabelece uma leitura científica e crítica da história, superando o idealismo e a metafísica hegeliana. Nessa perspectiva, a natureza é compreendida como parte da história e o homem como agente transformador da realidade, mediando sua existência por meio do trabalho. A partir de Quaini (1979), observa-se o esforço em fundamentar uma geografia humana científica, baseada na dialética marxista e na análise das relações entre sociedade e natureza como dimensões interdependentes da produção do espaço. Em diálogo com essas ideias, Ratzel, por meio da antropogeografia, introduziu a análise das influências recíprocas entre o meio natural e a organização social, antecipando reflexões sobre a formação territorial e o papel político do espaço. A geografia crítica contemporânea, representada por autores como Lefebvre, Soja e Milton Santos, ampliou essa abordagem ao compreender o espaço como produto histórico, social e político. Conclui-se que o materialismo histórico permanece como referência essencial para a análise geográfica, por oferecer instrumentos teóricos que permitem compreender o território como expressão concreta das contradições sociais e das dinâmicas históricas de transformação.

ABSTRACT

This study discusses the foundations of historical materialism and its implications for the development of geographical thought, highlighting the contributions of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Quaini, and Friedrich Ratzel. Historical materialism, by asserting that material and economic conditions determine the forms of social organization and consciousness, establishes a scientific and critical interpretation of history, overcoming idealist and metaphysical conceptions. In this perspective, nature is understood as part of history, and humans are seen as transformative agents who mediate their existence through labor. According to Quaini (1979), there is an effort to ground a scientific human geography based on Marxist dialectics and on the analysis of the interdependent relations between society and nature as dimensions of spatial production. In dialogue with these ideas, Ratzel, through anthropogeography, introduced the study of reciprocal influences between the natural environment and social organization, anticipating reflections on territorial formation and the political role of space. Contemporary critical geography, represented by authors such as Lefebvre, Soja, and Milton Santos, expanded this approach by understanding space as a historical, social, and political product. It is concluded that historical materialism remains an essential theoretical reference for geographic analysis, as it provides tools to interpret territory as a concrete expression of social contradictions and historical dynamics of transformation.
