ABSTRACT

This study aims to conduct a meta-synthesis of ten qualitative case studies that examine how the articulation between sensemaking and institutional theory has contributed to advancing knowledge about organizational change processes in dynamic and uncertain contexts. A qualitative meta-synthesis was carried out using eight single case studies and two multiple case studies, analyzing how different authors interpret the influence of institutional structures on the sensemaking processes of organizational agents. The results show that sensemaking, understood as the process through which individuals construct meanings in the face of phenomena subject to change, is strongly shaped by institutional practices and structures that both constrain and enable agency. The findings also indicate that the nature of institutional change, whether endogenous or exogenous, differently impacts agents’ capacity for action and their ability to reorganize interpretations of reality. Furthermore, changes arising from the hybridity of institutional logics may generate conflicts of interest that require active mediation for the construction of shared meanings. The study concludes that organizations tend to guide and regulate sensemaking processes through the reinforcement of discursive, material, and symbolic practices that support identities, histories, and institutionalized ties, thus fostering coherent and responsive actions aligned with organizational field demands.
