Abstract

Este artigo visa a analisar o conto "O zumbi de ‘Mansinha", de Jayme Griz, utilizando as teorias de Louis Vax (1965), Tzvetan Todorov (2017), Irène Bessière (2012) e David Roas (2014) sobre o maravilhoso. Utilizando a abordagem dialética, que associa fundo, forma e conteúdo e invoca o externo para interpretar a fatura textual, examinamos, por meio de uma pesquisa bibliográfica, como os personagens de Amaro Padre, João de Nêga, Cícero, Mestre Chico, o mandingueiro de Bem-Te-Vi e o senhor do engenho assimilam o componente sobrenatural no Engenho Liberdade. Os resultados permitiram identificar o gênero maravilhoso adequado para definir teoricamente o conto, constatação evidenciada pela aceitação imediata do zumbi da vaca morta pelo mandingueiro de Bem-Te-Vi e Mestre Chico, que naturalizam sua presença na realidade. Como representantes do sincretismo religioso presente na Zona da Mata Sul de Pernambuco, eles encarnam uma cultura rica em mitos, crenças, lendas e superstições derivadas do ethos africano, pressuposto social e histórico que permite situar o relato griziano nesse espectro literário. Assim, concluímos que a percepção do maravilhoso identificada na narrativa griziana reflete a intrínseca relação dos habitantes de uma sociedade agrária do século XIX com o sincrético misticismo que forjou a cultura no Nordeste.

ABSTRACT

This article aims to analyze the short story "’O zumbi de 'Mansinha,'" by Jayme Griz, using the theories of Louis Vax (1965), Tzvetan Todorov (2017), Irène Bessière (2012), and David Roas (2014) on the marvellous. Utilizing a dialectical approach that associates background, form, and content while invoking the external to interpret the textual fabric, we examine, through bibliographic research, how the characters Amaro Padre, João de Nêga, Cícero, Mestre Chico, the mandingueiro of Bem-Te-Vi, and the lord of the plantation assimilate the supernatural component in Engenho Liberdade. The results allowed us to identify the appropriate marvellous genre to theoretically define the short story, a finding evidenced by the immediate acceptance of the zombie of the dead cow by the mandingueiro of Bem-Te-Vi and Mestre Chico, who naturalize its presence in reality. As representatives of the religious syncretism present in the Zona da Mata Sul of Pernambuco, they embody a culture rich in myths, beliefs, legends, and superstitions derived from the African ethos, a social and historical presupposition that situates Griz's narrative within this literary spectrum. Thus, we conclude that the perception of the marvellous identified in Griz's narrative reflects the intrinsic relationship of the inhabitants of a 19th-century agrarian society with the syncretic mysticism that shaped culture in the Northeast.
